THINGS TO SEE AND DO
AITUTAKI

The lush tropical gardens and pristine beaches make Aitutaki very special, as do the friendly people. If you are not staying on Aitutaki, you might find it very worthwhile to take a day trip from Rarotonga.

Arguably one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world, Aitutaki's marine life and shallow waters make for wonderful snorkelling. Visitors delight in the iridescent giant clam. The most popular swimming, snorkelling and picnic spots are on the small islets to the southeast, each of which has a legend associated with it, such as One Foot Island. Don't forget to take a lagoon cruise - a high point for all visitors.

Sailing, diving and fishing (flycasters and light tackle anglers) are all available. There is a thirty-minute trek to the highest point, behind the hospital, that has excellent views. The Te-Poaki-O-Rae (stone of Rae) is a marae with volcanic rocks arranged in rows facing the main pillar. Other maraes are nearby. Vaipae and Tautu Villages are distinctive for their old coral and lime churches that add an extra dimension to worshipping.

At the Research Station of the Ministry of Marine Resources, which is open daily, visitors may see and learn about species of giant clams and baby sea turtles. There is also a market at the main town of Arutanga.

Budget to Luxury accommodation is available.
